| | | Conflict situations are hard for all of us. But when we add cultural differences to the constant traffic of heavy workloads, occasional roadblocks to deadlines, or the daily rush hours of our lives, "crashes" are inevitable. What happens when employees of different cultures react to a conflict situation from their own conflict style? How does it get resolved so that work is accomplished? |

| | | You might have seen the iceberg diversity and inclusion training model. It wasn't until I encountered a real iceberg, up close and personal, that I realized its power as a diversity and inclusion training metaphor. |
| | | The iceberg opens the diversity training conversation, providing "aha" moments for individuals and causing them to think about how we are all touched by the concepts of diversity and inclusion. Often, by the dimensions of diversity that are not above the surface. It reminds us that within a workplace there are many differences, but it's how those differences are appreciated and accepted that requires attention. |

| | | Stories like this cause me to reflect on why Black History Month is so important. February is a month when we deliberately try to promote the positive legacy of black Americans. |

| | | I firmly believe that everyone can be a mentor for someone. In fact, I think many of you already are; you just don't have the official card. |
| | | Protégés want someone who will help them navigate their career through the corporate culture. They want a learning partnership with someone who is a good listener and will problem-solve with them. |
| | | Try to learn where your protégé is coming from. Help this person to evaluate his or her circumstances. |

| | | In November we honor American Indian Heritage Month. We have asked ProGroup Senior Consultant John Bird to share his story of mentoring. His perspective on the subject of mentoring is informed by his Blackfeet heritage, with a message that speaks to any person regardless of background. |

| | | At a one-to-one, personal level we are handling global diversity very well. But the complexity of global business, a global workforce, and the international marketplace demands solid global diversity insights. |

| | | This article is the second part of our 2006 Women's History Month newsletter. It gives readers a sense of what is involved in telling women's stories to the benefit of every generation. Read part one, Wise Women. |
| | | For the first time in our country's history, there are four generations of women in the workforce today. Every one of them has a story that, if you take the time to hear it, can be enlightening. |
| | | As we conclude the month in question, we at ProGroup take the question of Black History Month's relevance very seriously. We challenge our readers to ask further, "What impact will Black History Month have on your year?" |
| | | What will be the primary issues ProGroup and our clients will be talking about in 2006? |
| | | It seems as though there is more commentary than ever about what to call the time between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. |
| | | Who can argue with the notion of giving thanks? Yet for much of the year, these two simple words, "thank you," often go unspoken. |
| | | My point is that what happened to my dad nearly 70 years ago is still happening in 2005 to thousands of people with disabilities. They are underestimated, underemployed, and underpaid, if they can get a job at all. |
| | | Despite the magnitude of this time for Jews, my guess is that there is little awareness of it in your workplace. |
| | | June is Pride Month: a time that was sparked by the June 28, 1969, Stonewall Rebellion, the first organized effort by gays and lesbians to seek equality under the law. Once primarily a celebration for the GLBT communities in major U.S. cities, Pride Month is now a regular event around the world in cities as diverse as Des Moines, Salt Lake City, Jerusalem, and likely a city near you. |
| | | Despite the fact that universities and the media have created their own list of "standard" terminology, usage has changed over time and probably will continue to evolve, leaving us with no list we can be sure of. Historically, controlling groups have had the authority to label or name other groups. Today, ethnic and cultural groups demand the power to name themselves. |
| | | Whether it's a comment from a coworker, boss, or customer, we are all prone to getting "hooked" on an issue that's near and dear to us, and expressing our views. The problem is that some of our opinions can unconsciously be hurtful to others and create tense workplaces that undermine teamwork, performance, and client service, as this recent example related by one company demonstrates. |
| | | We often see an obituary of an outstanding female community leader, inventor, or business owner. Have you ever paused to realize that this may be the only media attention ever given to her? |
| | | I know "they are just movies," but films can contain some outstanding portrayals of history and actual events that change the way we see the world. Why not see a movie as a way to celebrate Black History Month? At home or in a theatre, with a bowl of popcorn, a soda, and a good friend, you might find yourself absorbed in a flick that will transport you outside of your day-to-day reality and trigger conversations with others to continue the learning process. |
| | | We may not understand someone else's religion or customs or even be able to pronounce someone's name, or point to that person's home country on a map, but, we do know what it's like to be a parent, a husband or wife, a neighbor, a friend, a homeowner. |
| | | ProGroup sent out a newsletter that I wrote about the December holiday time. We got quite a bit of response to this one, most very positive and a few challenging me and my beliefs. We feel it is a newsletter we would like to repeat in hopes it will be helpful as you move into this important time for employees. |
| | | In August, we welcomed Fred Smith to ProGroup as a senior consultant. Fred hails from the Lone Star state of Texas where he spent most of his 25-year career in human resources and diversity. Most recently, Fred headed up diversity for H.E. Butt, a multi-billion dollar retail grocery company and one of the state's largest private employers with over 60,000 employees. |
| | | I'd like to share an experience I had that reminded me of how important it is to broaden our view of the world. I recently returned from Japan where my husband and I spent a few weeks traveling around by foot, train, and automobile. |
| | | On a recent walk in the glorious Minneapolis sunshine, our conversation quickly turned to the headline we had just read, related to the 40th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It was a powerful reminder of where we both were, separately but together, walking the picket lines for women's rights and civil rights. |
| | | The fact remains that over half of women with infants remain in the workforce. Our interviews with mothers returning from maternity leave continue to be filled with examples of micro-inequities that add to the sensitivity they already feel. Comments from a manager that suggest they may not be as committed to their job. |

| | | What does soul food have to do with planning History and Heritage Months in our workplaces and schools? Myrna Marofsky provides three concrete answers and then some. |
| | | When companies are unconscious of the underlying messages they are projecting, the results can be the same as posting a "Not Welcome Here" sign. People, like my friendly dentist, would be horrified at such a sign, but are often unaware they are unintentionally communicating an equivalent message in different ways. |
| | | Due to globalization, the knowledge revolution, and the technology explosion, more and more organizations and employees are crossing cultural borders every day. Workers must be able to identify key differences that impact business and address those differences so they can meet business goals with the best return on their investment. In this illuminating article, consultants Mary Beth Lamb and Shannon Murphy Robinson discuss global diversity strategy and lay out steps to success. |
| | | Global diversity has come of age. In today's constantly changing business environment, more and more organizations must increase sales, improve customer satisfaction, and maximize the productivity of their workforce across time, space, cultures, and geographies. |

| | | What is not recognized, says Bueno Washington, is that Latinos assume people in upper-level positions possess certain knowledge, skills, abilities, and experiences which allow them to make decisions therefore, they deserve respect. |
